Raleigh Garbage Disposal Ban
Effective March 17th, 2008 the Raleigh City Council has placed a ban on the installation of new and the replacement of old garbage disposals. The ban was originally proposed back in 1999, but was put on hold until recently. While they hope it will prevent losing excess water down the drain (to help with the drought), the ban has really been instigated to prevent water pollution and sewer blockage. Apparently there have been 99 cases of sewer overflow since 2005.
It is said that violators may be fined $25,000 per day, but according to the Mayor, the odds aren’t very likely. Still, I would play along nicely.
Just to clarify, this is only for households who are hooked up to the city’s water system.
